FOUNDATION

In 1900, as a result of the successful public response to the recent exhibitions that had been shown locally, the Town Council accepted the offer made by the Friends of the Basque Country Economic Association to create a municipal museum in San Sebastian.

The limited budget did not allow for valuable acquisitions, and therefore José Machimbarrena, the town mayor, appealed to the citizens of San Sebastian, who responded immediately with loans and donations. The museum’s development began with these objects, which served to shape the initial collection.
